Governance

Friends of Mongolia is governed by a board of directors elected by FOM members for three year terms. In addition, executive officers manage the day to day operations of FOM, and are elected by FOM members to one year terms. FOM is entirely operated by volunteers. Only in rare circumstances do board members or officers receive remuneration for services rendered, and only in the form of reimbursement for direct administrative costs incurred in the course of performing official duties.

FOM is a registered 501(c)3 not-for-profit, educational organization which allows donors to claim income tax exemptions on most cash and in-kind contributions to FOM. As such, the board of directors and officers have the added legal responsibility of acting as trustees to funds contributed to the organization, ensuring those funds are utilized in keeping with FOM's public service mission. The board of directors and officers meet via teleconference regularly (usually twice a month), and members, as well as interested individuals, are encouraged to participate in the meetings.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and Co-Directors have the authority to form committees and appoint individuals to supervise particular official duties. Those interested in contributing to FOM's mission by volunteering in an official capacity should contact one of the officers listed below about either applying to become an officer or creating a new position to further FOM's growth as an organization. Working for FOM is professionally rewarding, allowing one opportunities to acquire new and useful skills while contributing to cultural exchange and understanding between the Mongolia and the United States.
