One of Friends of Mongolia's core missions revolves around what Peace Corps refers to as the 3rd Goal. Reaching out and educating as many as possible about the beautiful Country and people of Mongolia. By going that extra step Peace Corps and Friends of Mongolia believe that through this education and outreach invaluable understanding and relationships are built between our 2 great countries. If you have a great idea for a potential outreach opportunity, let us know at Admin@friendsofmongolia.org

Friends of Mongolia is on Facebook Friends of Mongolia started a Facebook group about 6 months ago, and the response has been tremendous. As of today, the group has almost 950 members, a staggering amount to those who have started other groups on Facebook only to see membership rise to only a few dozen. Where does this enthusiasm for Friends of Mongolia come from? It is not clear at this point, but one might speculate that the easy clicking functionality of Facebook allows Mongolphiles the world over an easy way to demonstrate their support for all things Mongolian. The brain trust at FOM is hard at work trying to figure out how to translate this big group of contacts into real contributors to FOM's mission, whether it is through volunteering time or cash contributions. At any rate, it is a spectacular sight to behold at this point. View the group page at www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4033497643. Friends of Mongolia Celebrates 10th Anniversary by Recruiting RPCVs
In 2009 Friends of Mongolia turns 10 years old. The organization was founded in 1999 by enterprising members of the 7th training group of Peace Corps volunteers in Mongolia--known as M-7s in Peace Corps Mongolia parlance. Since 1999 the organization has had it share of ups and downs, notoriety and obscurity, but at the beginning of its 10th year the organization has never been stronger. As part of the celebrations FOM is determined to increase its membership base and to have a sizable percentage come from the hundreds of returned Peace Corps volunteers (RPCV) who have served in Mongolia. To date over 600 volunteers have served in Mongolia, so there is a sizable pool of people to draw from. Why should RPCVs be interested in joining? It's a great question that can be answered in this way: Friends of Mongolia is your organization. It is a grassroots organization that lives and dies by the commitment of volunteers. It reaches out to small communities in Mongolia changing lives in positive ways. It promotes greater understanding of Mongolia in the United States. It does all this by raising money each year from private donors and ensuring that at least 95% of each donation goes directly to support educational and cultural exchange programs as opposed to administrative overhead and salaries. |
