The Friends of Mongolia Scholarship Committee selected 7 new scholarship recipients for the 2009-2010 academic year on July 7th, 2009. Along with the 12 continuing scholarship awards from 2008, these 19 scholars are some of the brightest and best students Mongolia has to offer and all promise to perform well in college and beyond.
In the first two years of the scholarship program Friends of Mongolia offered scholarships to males from rural areas studying in all fields. Beginning last year FOM began expanding the number and type of scholarships offered to students as a result of growing contributions from FOM members and supporters. The 19 scholarships granted this year are funded by 5 different scholarship funds. The following is a description of each scholarship type.
FOM Men’s Scholarship: Targets young men graduating from high school and current college/university students from the rural areas of Mongolia who show strong personal drive and determination. 3 new recipients, 2 continuing awards.
FOM Women’s Scholarship: Targets young women graduating from high school and current college/university students from the rural areas of Mongolia who show strong personal drive and determination. 1 recipient.
M-7 Women’s Scholarship: Funding generously donated by former Peace Corps volunteers who served in Mongolia in 1996-1998. The M-7 group chose to support women’s education because even though more women attend college than men, women still face significant barriers in Mongolian society. 1 recipient.
The Stanley Munson Memorial Engineering and Vocational Scholarship: This scholarship was given by the Munson family in loving memory of Stanley Munson, the grandfather of a former Peace Corps volunteer in Mongolia. He was an electrical engineer and enjoyed woodworking and other such activities in his spare time. 1 recipient.
The Croft Family Scholarship: The Croft family, Layton and Allison and their two sons, established this scholarship last year. Layton served in the Peace Corps in Bayanhongor Soum and Allison served in Bayanchandmon soum and this scholarship is to honor students from those two areas. 5 recipients.
The Khan Bank Men’s Scholarship began in conjunction with the FOM Men’s Scholarship four years ago with a matching grant from the Khan Bank Foundation. Since then Khan Bank and FOM have jointly funded over 20 scholarships for young men from rural communities and disadvantaged backgrounds to study in the higher education school of their choice in Mongolia. 6 recipients.
